But we also need to persist in removing the barriers to women\u2019s progress still built into the legal profession so that women embarking on their careers now can expect to be successful whatever path they choose to take\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Then<\/strong><\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28816\"  class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28816 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/odnb-9780198614128-e-1005653-graphic-1-full-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/odnb-9780198614128-e-1005653-graphic-1-full-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/zegal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/odnb-9780198614128-e-1005653-graphic-1-full.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 222px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Ivy Williams<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was in 1919 that <strong>The Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919<\/strong> passed, allowing women to enter the legal profession. Not long after in 1921, Dr Ivy Williams <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the first woman to be called to the English bar. Whilst she never practised law, she was the first woman to teach law at a British university.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Now<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28804 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/rose-heilbron-jpg_orig-244x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/rose-heilbron-jpg_orig-244x300.jpg 244w, https:\/\/zegal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/rose-heilbron-jpg_orig.jpg 407w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 244px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then we have seen women change-makers lead the way in the legal industry with Dame Rose Heilbron becoming the first woman to lead an English murder case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28798 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/mw238255-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/mw238255-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/zegal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/mw238255.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 199px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And more recently, Baroness Hale appointed t<\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">he first woman Justice of the Supreme Court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is clear to see; women have paved the way for the next generation of female lawyers through dedication and hard work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is it equal pay for equal work?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Equal Pay Dilemma <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The law on equal pay is set out in the \u2018equality of terms\u2019 provisions of the<strong> Equality Act 2010<\/strong> (the Act). The Act gives a right to equal pay between women and men for equal work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst the law sets out very clear guidelines that no individual should receive lesser pay just because of their sex, in practice this same theory is not always adopted. Stats from EHRC shows that Women earn on average <strong>43.5% less per hour,<\/strong> and <strong>73.3% less in bonuses. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women across the UK are now standing up to their employers with confidence and addressing their concerns with gender pay gaps. Businesses across the country are now obliged to publish data on their gender pay gap and can be taken to the Employment Tribunal for clear breaches of The Act. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is, of course, to any female lawyer a reassurance to have access to such data, and this has no doubt influenced the Top 100 law firms. But, what about those female lawyers who are self-employed? Are they issue free? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course not, which leads me to my next topic: maternity and parenting as a female legal professional. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Lawyer And A Mother <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like men, women spend a tremendous amount of time in academic study, and then in training, to qualify as lawyers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even upon qualification, newly established lawyers are stamped with titles such as \u201cjunior counsel\u201d and \u201cnewly qualified\u201d. The journey to becoming a successful lawyer is never ending and most are not satisfied with their success until they reach QC \/Partner level. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those women in employment, whether that be as a solicitor in a firm or as in-house advocates, there are strict laws against pregnancy, maternity and sex discrimination, that provide a level of safeguarding to female lawyers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Of course, laws do not eliminate illegalities in their entirety, and the Employment Tribunal still sees thousands of discrimination claims pass through its doors every year. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>What About Barristers?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;It\u2019s true that being self-employed does have its issues, as I covered in my<a href=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/blog\/post\/a-letter-to-an-aspiring-lawyer-why-the-gig-economy-should-be-on-your-radar\/\"> last article<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most pertinently here, protections from discrimination are limited in comparison to their solicitor associates. Jane McNeill QC, an employment barrister at Old Square Chambers and mother of two says: \u201c<em>Both are roller coaster rides, and to successfully combine them, it\u2019s essential to have strong support networks, which must include excellent childcare that you feel confident with.\u201d <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some women opt for a nanny, but this may only be an option for the highly paid, and out of reach for many, particularly those at the Criminal Bar.
