The one thing you need to understand about the brain to help you perform at your best<\/h4>\n

I was soaked from head to toe. <\/span> <\/span>I looked up the stone steps <\/span>next to the old Chinese temple <\/span>and watched dirty rainwater rush down like a waterfall. <\/span> <\/span>I was calf-deep in it.<\/span><\/p>\n

A typhoon had caught me on the way to one of my first gigs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, I\u2019m known as a coach and trainer who helps entrepreneurs make more money while still having work-life balance. B<\/span>ack then, <\/span>when I started my business in 2013, my original plan was to teach everyday etiquette to children.<\/span><\/p>\n

So <\/span>t<\/span>here I was, <\/span>wet<\/span>, <\/span>miserable<\/span> and <\/span>wondering why I was <\/span>on my way to<\/span> teach English to a 5-year old Japanese girl<\/span> f<\/span>or HK$250\/hour (about US$30). <\/span> <\/span>After transportation fees, travel time and teaching materials, I was<\/span> barely making any money.<\/span><\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t make sense.<\/span><\/h5>\n

I <\/span>had<\/span> two Ivy League degrees, <\/span>10 years of management experience in marketing and human resources in the US and Asia, <\/span>I even held a regional role in a multinational company overseeing <\/span>the HR function<\/span> in eight Asian countries<\/span>. <\/span>So h<\/span>ow the heck did I get here?!<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me tell you.<\/span><\/h5>\n

I had a crazy dream to <\/span>develop <\/span>poised and confident leaders of tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span> <\/span>abandon<\/span>ed<\/span> ALL of my world-class schooling and work experience<\/span> to<\/span> <\/span>learn<\/span> a <\/span>completely different <\/span>subject (etiquette) and teach<\/span> <\/span>it to <\/span>kid<\/span>s<\/span> —<\/span> which I\u2019d never done before. <\/span>O<\/span>n top of it all, I started a business from scratch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite being trained and certified <\/span>to do the work, <\/span>I was terrified to market myself as a children\u2019s etiquette consultant.<\/span><\/p>\n

I thought tutoring <\/span>kids <\/span>would<\/span> “train <\/span>me <\/span>up” and give me <\/span>confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, five months into my entrepreneurial journey, I was still in ‘getting ready’ mode, as well as dealing with f<\/span>eelings of d<\/span>isappointment<\/span> and g<\/span>etting paid peanuts.<\/span><\/p>\n

That night as I rode home on a green minibus, and decided that I wasn’t going to allow my own limiting beliefs<\/span> to hold me back. No more ‘I<\/span>‘m not ready yet’ or ‘This is what <\/span>I<\/span> deserve’<\/span>. And I was done with<\/span> <\/span>letting<\/span> other people <\/span>tell me what I was <\/span>worth.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The next day I started doing proper business development<\/span> and within <\/span>one month<\/span> <\/span>I was teaching formal Western table manners to kids at the prestigious Hong Kong Cricket Club.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Power of Thoughts: A <\/span>Brain-Based<\/span> Approach to <\/span>Business and <\/span>Leadership<\/span> <\/h4>\n

Your <\/span>business is a direct reflection of you<\/span>: y<\/span>our strengths, weaknesses, preferences, <\/span>and<\/span> values<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

If something\u2019s working in your <\/span>company<\/span>, it\u2019s because of you.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

If it<\/span>\u2019s NOT<\/span> working…well, it\u2019s also because of you.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I<\/span> invite <\/span>you to be<\/span>come<\/span> more aware of how you <\/span>THINK<\/span>. <\/span>Mastering your thoughts <\/span>is <\/span>the best, eas<\/span>i<\/span>est and fastest way to get better results in your business.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Concept<\/strong><\/p>\n

This concept was developed by Dr. David Rock, who originated the <\/span>neuroscience-based <\/span>Results Coaching System<\/span>, which helps leaders<\/span> <\/span>bring out the best performance in themselves and others by literally improving the way their brains process information<\/strong>.<\/span> This is what I help my clients do.<\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span>approach works by referring to the Iceberg model, which is used in cognitive behavioural therap<\/span>y<\/span>. It describes how our performance is driven by our sets of behaviours. <\/span>Our<\/span> <\/span>habits <\/span>are driven by our feelings, which in turn are driven by our thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Iceberg model, our performance and some of our behaviours are visible, while<\/span> <\/span>other behaviours, feelings and thoughts are below the water line. There\u2019s a lot more driving our performance than just the few habits we see on the surface. And at the base of all this, is the way we think.<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span>hat we achieve at work is driven by how we think. Yet when someone wants to improve performance, they tend to stay at the surface and focus on the performance itself. They rarely consider the habits that might be driving the performance, discussing feelings, and even less often consider things at the level of thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Example<\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s analyse the story I told <\/span>y<\/span>ou. <\/span>T<\/span>hese<\/span> were my <\/span>thoughts<\/span> at the time:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>What I\u2019m offering is new to the market. I\u2019m not sure <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> going to work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I don\u2019t have enough <\/span>credibility or experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if I screw up?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

These thoughts <\/span>triggered<\/span> me <\/span>to <\/span>feel<\/span> unproductive <\/span>emotions<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Self-doubt<\/span><\/p>\n

Fear of judgment and failure<\/span><\/p>\n

Frustrated that <\/span>I wasn\u2019t<\/span> achieving what <\/span>I<\/span> want<\/span>ed<\/span><\/p>\n

The Result<\/h4>\n

The resulting<\/span> <\/span>behaviou<\/span>r from my thoughts and unproductive emotions<\/span>? I <\/span>tutor<\/span>ed<\/span> <\/span>kids<\/span> in English<\/span> instead of <\/span>marketing my etiquette consulting services <\/span>to <\/span>organisational<\/span> clients.<\/span> Which led to me making less money than I wanted<\/span> and providing services I wasn\u2019t passionate about. <\/span>How crazy is that? <\/span> <\/p>\n

I<\/span> imagine so many of us have experienced derailment of this sort at one time or another.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully<\/span>, t<\/span>he moment I directed my attention to more empowering thoughts, I <\/span>gained the motivation to <\/span>take the necessary action<\/span>s<\/span> to move my business in the right direction.<\/span><\/p>\n

So<\/span> my friend, y<\/span>ou create your own reality<\/span>. <\/span>C<\/span>hoose your thoughts carefully<\/span><\/strong>.<\/strong> T<\/span>hey can lead you down the right path \u2013 or the wrong one<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n
