Others apply them in a more serial manner: ISO9001, GQM, CMMI, 6 Sigma, Lean, Agile, TDD, Continuous Delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"yF0IC\" data-hook=\"post-description\">\n<article class=\"blog-post-page-font\">\n<div class=\"post-content__body\">\n<div class=\"lV_uZ _1LHlu _1ltva\" data-rce-version=\"7.19.2\">\n<div class=\"kcuBq _1PkHV blog-post-page-font _3f8WX uatYj\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"kaqlz _1FQ9t blog-post-page-font zJfAe\">\n<p id=\"viewer-1tib8\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">Yet after a time most of these initiatives splutter and fade into obscurity.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"viewer-2gsci\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">Often the reasons are obvious:<\/h5>\n<ul class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-ul\">\n<li id=\"viewer-34b7l\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr public-DraftStyleDefault-reset _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">was the flavor of the month<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-2tv0h\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">an executive had a bee in his bonnet<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-8077d\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">the organization&#8217;s objectives weren&#8217;t aligned<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-1lvcb\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">a company&#8217;s business model had changed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-bc6nk\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">staff felt it had become a &#8216;going through the motions&#8217; exercise<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-5lc8j\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">and a whole heap more you could add yourself<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"viewer-105hb\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">But often the methods are implemented with the best intentions.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">How can they go wrong?<\/h5>\n<p id=\"viewer-5j008\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">A multifaceted approach can often work best since most organizations are not homogenous and have different strengths and weaknesses &#8211; just like the improvement models themselves &#8211; they each have areas that they excel in and organizations for which they are not appropriate (e.g. CMMI in a 2 person company).<\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-bba99\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">Whilst many have tried (and are still trying), there is not yet a <a class=\"_2qJYG blog-link-hashtag-color _2xVcV\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_unified_theory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grand Unified Theory<\/a> of business and process improvement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-b2sng\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">But in adopting a multi-model approach an organization needs to be careful to select the most appropriate situation for each model they want to engage.<\/p>\n<div id=\"viewer-52d95\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"viewer-34vic\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"viewer-e76kk\" class=\"q2uC4 public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">It is difficult to visualize all of the improvements from all of the initiatives and how they are engaging the other initiatives &#8211; instead, each initiative develops a bubble around it &#8211; taking more projects and activities into scope.<\/p>\n<h6 id=\"viewer-52hsj\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">Similar to physical bubbles each initiative grows or shrinks depending on the pressure from inside supporting it and the pressures from outside restricting it in size.<\/h6>\n<p id=\"viewer-9qttl\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">Occasionally two bubbles will touch and unless this event is handled explicitly,\u00a0 one or more bubbles may burst.<\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-ep0mq\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">A better solution is to ensure each initiative clearly defines what it will do with the processes, areas\/projects\/tasks, cultural behaviors that it has in common (where it &#8220;touches&#8221;) with the other initiatives.<\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-eagdm\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">As noted above, many methods appear to extol the same virtues and build up a strawman of other methods to differentiate themselves.\u00a0 The implementation is often lacking in specifics to show differences to those who have come before.<\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-a19bq\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">While some SPI approaches provide guidance for selecting them e.g. good for safety-critical domain,\u00a0 bad for teams &gt; 50 people &#8211; generally these tend to blend and an ad-hoc approach is taken (often by default).\u00a0 This means that many companies have a multitude of improvement approaches &#8211; some new, some legacy and other just vague remnants of what happened before.<\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-2grsv\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">We&#8217;ve all seen TQM, Quality Circles, Deming and other approaches lurking about the place &#8211; some still used, others still around but no one knows why and what it was supposed to be for.<\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-bkomu\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">Typically when an organisation has staff turnover, they lose a lot of corporate memory.\u00a0 Sometimes the turnover includes PI sponsors, champions or similar.\u00a0 The remaining staff then have to pick up the pieces and carry on &#8211; but because of the budget cuts that invariably accompany these turnover re-orgs, carrying on is rendered almost impossible except to use a template here and a form there.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"viewer-83qi8\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">What is lacking?<\/h4>\n<div id=\"viewer-c7iko\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-36mkk\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">A whole of business i.e. portfolio view of improvement initiatives.\u00a0 Ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-ul\">\n<li id=\"viewer-9g7sg\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr public-DraftStyleDefault-reset _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">have we identified all of our current (and remnant) improvement and change initiatives<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-9imp\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">are these initiatives still happening?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-57bgp\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">have they been institutionalised\/operationalised?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-a7t97\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">how committed are staff to them?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-dsnrc\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">how do they align with current company objectives, structure, focus, direction, technologies?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-b65db\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">can they be prioritised?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"viewer-1n0d2\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">It&#8217;s this prioritisation process that enables a purging of unused activities and initiatives.\u00a0 If a method or improvement approach is still about but hasn&#8217;t been used or touched in 6 months, you can be pretty sure it can be dropped.\u00a0 Do a lessons-learnt or retrospective, use what you can and close down the initiative.\u00a0 By doing this the improvement initiatives can remain fresh, relevant and focused on what is needed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-2msdb\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">Whilst cost-benefit calculations are notoriously difficult due to competing projects and compound variables e.g. was the defect rate reduction due to the ISO9001 initiative or a peer review process as instigated by CMMI?\u00a0 Or was it a technology improvement?<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"viewer-95bd7\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">Even still, by looking at the tasks implemented including:<\/h5>\n<ul class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-ul\">\n<li id=\"viewer-c9t66\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr public-DraftStyleDefault-reset _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">what was intended<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-f7fe6\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">cause\/effect<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-8h3p5\" class=\"ljrnk _1QOLZ _2eQSj public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0\n   public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">\n<p class=\"_208Ie _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk\">what occurred<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"viewer-6lkvm\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _25MYV _1Fao9 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\">We can begin to identified potential weightings of attributes from each SPI approach and then use this as a basis of comparing impacts from improvement methods and their eventual impact on company objectives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1yEvn\">\n<div class=\"_3YxRQ\" data-hook=\"post-main-actions-desktop\">\n<div class=\"ygPzE
