But the goals have always remained the same \u2013 sell your products and services, beat out the competition, and make a good profit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E221\"><span id=\"E222\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">The methods of sales a<\/span><span id=\"E223\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">nd marketing, though, have gone through a steady evolution since those early days. Eventually, printed advertisements began to appear in newspapers, then catalogs, mailbox flyers, billboards, radio, and television. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E224\"><span id=\"E225\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">But the biggest disruption in sales and marketing<\/span><span id=\"E226\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\"> clearly came with the Internet. And while it is relatively new in the grand scheme of things, marketing strategies, tactics, and venues have moved exponentially forward. One of the most dramatic evolutions has been what is called \u201cthe sales journey.\u201d In t<\/span><span id=\"E227\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">he early days of the Internet, companies focused on getting leads and then engaging in direct sales of their products or services (often called a \u201chard sell\u201d). Moving a lead through the sales journey meant touting the product or service being offered, and <\/span><span id=\"E228\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">using some <\/span><span id=\"E229\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">psychological tactics to motivate movement down through the \u201cfunnel\u201d until a sale was finally made. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"E231\"><span id=\"E232\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">How the Sales Journey Has <\/span><span id=\"E234\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Changed<\/span><\/h4>\n<p id=\"E236\"><span id=\"E237\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">The sales journey itself remains pretty standard \u2013 potential customers become aware of a product <\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\" style=\"font-size: inherit;\">they want or <\/span><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\" style=\"font-size: inherit;\">need. Then they do some research, locate potential companies, compare those products and prices, and eventually make a purchase. The sales journey can really be defined as all interactions that a specific company has with a consumer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\" style=\"font-size: inherit;\">And it is those interac<\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\" style=\"font-size: inherit;\">tions that have changed. They are no longer about pushing sales of a product or service. They are now all about the customer and putting that customer first.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E240\"><span id=\"E241\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Let\u2019s take a look at what putting the customer first really looks like. The \u201cjourney\u201d is reall<\/span><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">y yours now, not the customer\u2019s. And here is what your journey looks like.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"E243\" class=\"qowt-li-2_0 qowt-list\"><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">The Research<\/span><\/h4>\n<p id=\"E245\"><span id=\"E246\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">It\u2019s called developing a buyer persona. <strong>Who is your ideal customer and what does s\/he look like? What age group? Average income? Socioeconomic status? Le<\/strong><\/span><strong><span id=\"E247\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">vel of education? What types of jobs\/careers? Where does this customer hang out online and when? What does s\/he do for entertainment? Type of sense of humour? What inspires?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"E248\"><span id=\"E249\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">This is called big data. Lots of tools and\/or data services will provide you very<\/span><span id=\"E250\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\"> detailed answers to such questions as who typically wants or needs your product or service and what are their typical purchasing behaviours? And that is where you need to be too.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E259\"><span id=\"E260\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Your <\/span><a id=\"E261\" contenteditable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/blog\/post\/top-5-ecommerce-website-builders-for-small-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span id=\"E262\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">website mu<\/span><span id=\"E263\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">st appeal to your target audience<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E264\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">, and this may call for a re-design. Does that audience like sleek and simple? Does it appreciate some humour thrown <\/span><span id=\"E265\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">into your product descriptions? Can you craft an explainer video that educates, entertains, and motivates\/i<\/span><span id=\"E267\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">nspires while it presents the value you provide and the problem(s) you solve? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E267\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">If you want some inspiration on your own, take a look at the <\/span><a id=\"E268\" contenteditable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZUG9qYTJMsI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span id=\"E269\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">original explainer video produced by Dollar Shave Club<\/span><\/a>. I<span id=\"E270\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">t is hilarious and yet presents the value and solves a big problem for its audience \u2013 never having to run out of razors and be forced to use a dirty one. <strong>The cost? $2,500, and it went viral within hours.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Blog<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E291\"><span id=\"E292\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Now, <strong>about that blog. It is not a place to s<\/strong><\/span><span id=\"E293\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\"><strong>ell.<\/strong> It&#8217;s a place to <\/span><a id=\"E294\" contenteditable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/blog\/post\/blogging-for-business-jack-up-your-sales-and-connect-with-your-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span id=\"E295\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">provide great content that your audience will want to read\/see<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E296\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">. It must educate, entertain, and inspire. An<\/span><span id=\"E297\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">d it must include topics that your audience sees as valuable. Mike Clark, Content Director for <\/span><a id=\"E298\" contenteditable=\"false\" href=\"http:\/\/subjecto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span id=\"E300\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Subjecto<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E302\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">, a professional writing service, puts it this way: \u201cOur blog is where we make connections with our current and <\/span><span id=\"E303\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">potential customers. We don\u2019t feature our products and services. We provide our audience with valuable insights on how to write, with holiday entertainment and humour, and with inspirational messages about the power of the written word. To try to sell on ou<\/span><span id=\"E304\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">r blog would make us far less attractive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Social Media<\/h4>\n<p id=\"E305\"><span id=\"E306\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">On to your<strong> social media presence. Here is where you develop those important trustful relationships with your audience<\/strong>. You already know where they hang out, so pick the two most popular platforms. Facebook is an o<\/span><span id=\"E307\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">bvious but based upon the age and other factors of your audience, you might choose Instagram, Snapchat, <\/span><span id=\"E308\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">etc. Y<\/span><span id=\"E308\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">our content, again, must delight and motivate. Here are some obvious topics for your posts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li id=\"E310\" class=\"qowt-li-1_0 qowt-list\"><span id=\"E311\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Tell your own stories and make yourself human.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Show stories about your team<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Add some humour (jokes, memes GIF\u2019s, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Feature happy customers through photos and videos<\/li>\n<li>Showcase new products or services (but be careful not to try to sell them) that will solve problems<\/li>\n<li>Explain <a id=\"E323\" style=\"font-size: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" contenteditable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/zegal.com\/blog\/post\/why-you-cant-ignore-csr-in-your-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span id=\"E324\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">how you are socially responsible<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E325\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\" style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> \u2013 what community\/charitable activities do you support and\/or participate in?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Hold contests, take surveys, ask for feedback, and ot<span id=\"E328\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\" style=\"font-size: inherit;\">herwise show your audience that you are focused on their wants and needs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Always provide links to your website where the actual \u201cselling\u201d can occur<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E331\"><span id=\"E332\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Your goal is to grow a following that looks forward to your posts and wants to share them with their online <\/span><span id=\"E333\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">communities. It is also a place to respond to any questions, problems, or issues that arise.<strong> Resolving those issues publicly proves that you care about your customer, not just your revenue.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"E334\" class=\"qowt-li-2_0 qowt-list\"><span id=\"E335\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Customer Support\/Service<\/span><\/h4>\n<p id=\"E336\"><strong><span id=\"E337\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Nothing endears a customer more to a comp<\/span><\/strong><span id=\"E338\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\"><strong>any than when he gets amazing customer support and service.<\/strong> While much of this can be automatically generated (e.g., streamlined processes for returns and exchanges), there is also the need for personal responses and problem-solving via a live customer ser<\/span><span id=\"E339\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">vice agent, especially when a customer is not happy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E340\"><span id=\"E341\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Use social monitoring tools to alert you whenever you are mentioned online. Access that mention and respond as quickly as possible. Again, this develops trustful relationships between you and your custom<\/span><span id=\"E342\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">ers, and the chances of repeat business are significantly increased if you do what is necessary to resolve an issue and achieve customer satisfaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"E343\" class=\"qowt-li-2_0 qowt-list\"><span id=\"E344\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Supporting Non-English-Speaking Audiences<\/span><\/h4>\n<p id=\"E346\"><span id=\"E347\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">This may not apply to all businesses but think about it. Just i<\/span><span id=\"E348\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">n the U.S. alone, there are large populations for whom English is not the primary language \u2013 Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Hindu, etc. <strong>How are you appealing to these audiences?<\/strong> <\/span><span id=\"E350\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">Are<\/span><span id=\"E352\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\"> your website, your blog and your social media posts honouring these ESL customer<\/span><span id=\"E353\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">s? You can easily provide translation options for your site, blog, and posts, by using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daytranslations.com\/translation-services\/\">professional translation services<\/a> that are reasonable. This demonstrates that you care about non-native speakers who can make up a sizeable portion of your target audien<\/span><span id=\"E354\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">ce. He wants to know a lot about any c<\/span><span id=\"E366\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">ompany with whom he may choose to do business. Your job during this sales journey is to know what your customer wants and needs, to establish trusting relationships first, solve problems, and provide value. The sales will come as a natural by-product. <strong>The <\/strong><\/span><strong><span id=\"E367\" class=\"qowt-font4-OpenSans\">\u201csales journey\u201d is no longer the customer\u2019s.
