It can happen at school, at work, in public or even at home, and the vast majority of victims know the perpetrator. Research has shown a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sg.yougov.com\/en-sg\/news\/2019\/07\/30\/quarter-singaporean-women-have-experienced-sexual-\/\">quarter of Singaporean women and one in ten men<\/a>&nbsp;have experienced sexual harassment, while only half reported the incident or even mentioned it to another person.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a victim, it\u2019s important not to let any feelings of embarrassment or fear of repercussion prevent you from seeking help and justice. While sexual harassment is not explicitly defined by the law, it is covered by the broader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sso.agc.gov.sg\/Act\/PHA2014#pr3-\" data-et-has-event-already=\"true\">Protection from Harassment Act<\/a>. Here\u2019s a guide to understanding the different types of harassment and how you can take action if it happens to you.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Physical_harassment_and_sexual_violence\"><\/span><strong>Physical harassment and sexual violence<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6454\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/physical-harrassment.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 626px, 100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/physical-harrassment.jpg 626w, https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/physical-harrassment-480x360.jpg 480w\" alt=\"physical harrassment\" width=\"100%\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Physical sexual harassment and assault is unwanted behaviour ranging in severity from excessive arm touching and butt slapping to kissing, molestation and rape. The most serious forms of assault carry the harshest penalties under the law, with rape carrying up to 20 years in prison. It also includes unlawful stalking, whereby a person follows you, interferes with your property or loiters near your home, workplace or any other places you frequent. It\u2019s important to note that these laws apply to victims who are unable to defend themselves because they are drunk, unconscious or otherwise debilitated.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Verbal_harassment\"><\/span><strong>Verbal harassment<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6455\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/verbal-harrassment.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 638px, 100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/verbal-harrassment.jpg 638w, https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/verbal-harrassment-480x320.jpg 480w\" alt=\"verbal harrassment\" width=\"100%\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A common misconception is that an act is only considered sexual harassment if it is physical in nature. On the contrary, a range of non-physical behaviour counts as harassment under the law, including the use of threatening, abusive or insulting words with a sexual connotation. If, for example, a colleague loudly describes their desire for a sexual relationship with you, knowing you are in earshot and intending to cause distress, they would most likely be guilty under the law.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Online_harassment\"><\/span><strong>Online harassment<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6456\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/online-sexual-harrassment.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 666px, 100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/online-sexual-harrassment.jpg 666w, https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/online-sexual-harrassment-480x320.jpg 480w\" alt=\"online sexual harrassment\" width=\"100%\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The digital age has its perks, but it has also brought new ways for victims to be targeted with harassment.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s particularly common on social media platforms, whether it be a post threatening to release intimate videos of a person or direct messages pestering someone for nude photographs. The anonymity (or semi-anonymity) of the internet can make it seem like you are powerless to stop it, but online harassment is considered an offence and is very much punishable under the law in Singapore.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_forms_of_harassment\"><\/span><strong>Other forms of harassment<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6457\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/forms-of-sexual-harrassment.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 621px, 100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/forms-of-sexual-harrassment.jpg 621w, https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/forms-of-sexual-harrassment-480x320.jpg 480w\" alt=\"forms of sexual harrassment\" width=\"100%\"><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A person does not need to touch or speak to a victim to subject them to sexual harassment. Any obscene act which causes discomfort can be considered harassment, such as exposing one\u2019s genitals, leering at another\u2019s body, making lewd gestures or showing others explicit images. Even an indirect act such as saving a pornographic image as a screensaver on your computer can fall under this category in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_can_I_do_if_Im_a_victim_of_sexual_harassment\"><\/span><strong>What can I do if I\u2019m a victim of sexual harassment?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/what-to-do-if-I-am-sexually-harrassed.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 688px, 100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/what-to-do-if-I-am-sexually-harrassed.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.tembusulaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/what-to-do-if-I-am-sexually-harrassed-480x329.jpg 480w\" alt=\"what to do if I am sexually harrassed\" width=\"100%\">&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Firstly, it\u2019s important to acknowledge the nature of the act and how it made you feel \u2013 sexual harassment is never the fault of the victim. There are extensive resources available online to help empower you to find justice, including&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/sacc.aware.org.sg\/get-information\/protection-from-harassment-act\/?fbclid=IwAR0tB0LtGmvGvduG8D2L6We7bcb2XB3E92ZXPmQSa__uJgy6XLCe27toZEU\">AWARE\u2019s sexual assault care centre<\/a>. In the meantime, try to gather any evidence you can before it\u2019s lost, such as text messages or social media posts by the perpetrator.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re not sure whether you want to press charges, it\u2019s important to seek advice from an experienced lawyer who can set out your legal options and offer guidance based on your circumstances. The incident should also be reported to the police as soon as possible so they have a record of what happened.
