Start by Framing User Stories and Defining Goals <\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"E405\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E406\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">A good story map should always have clear borders. It should depict the current state of your product and not touch upon the features that are now in development or are pla<\/span><span id=\"E407\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">nned for the near future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E408\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E409\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Before you start writing user stories, your main goal is to <\/span><span id=\"E410\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">focus on the product you have right now and bring it to life<\/span><span id=\"E411\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E412\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E413\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">So, the first step in mapping a user story is actually defining the MVP \u2013 Minimal Viable Product, or an ea<\/span><span id=\"E414\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">rly version of your product with its most important features. To build this image of your product, you need to answer three basic <\/span><span id=\"E416\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">wh<\/span><span id=\"E418\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">&#8211; questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"E419\" class=\"qowt-li-5_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E420\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">What? <\/span><span id=\"E421\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">What problem are you trying to solve with your product? What are the needs that your product can fulfil? <\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E422\" class=\"qowt-li-5_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E423\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Who?<\/span><span id=\"E424\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\"> Who is a typical user of your product?<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E425\" class=\"qowt-li-5_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E426\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Why?<\/span><span id=\"E427\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\"> Why is your product the one for the typical user, and which benefits will it bring them?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"E428\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E429\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Once you ha<\/span><span id=\"E430\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">ve the description of your product, you can proceed to outline the main MVP features. Summarize all hypothetical goals your buyers might have when purchasing your product and align them with respective product features. <\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E455\" class=\"qowt-li-1_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E456\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Put <\/span><span id=\"E457\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">your goals on index cards<\/span><span id=\"E458\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">. Build User Personas <\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"E484\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E485\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Another basic feature of a user story map is a user persona. Hypothetically, you could write stories about random product users<\/span><span id=\"E486\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">, but it would lead you nowhere once you start breaking down your map into activities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E487\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E488\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">The description of a user persona typically consists of the information on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"E489\" class=\"qowt-li-3_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E490\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">age<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E491\" class=\"qowt-li-3_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E492\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">gender<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E493\" class=\"qowt-li-3_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E494\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">background (job, income, education)<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E495\" class=\"qowt-li-3_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E496\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">spending habits and behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E497\" class=\"qowt-li-3_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E498\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">psychographics <\/span><span id=\"E499\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">(goals, needs, pain points)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"E500\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E501\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">The trick here is that this information may vary depending on the <\/span><span id=\"E502\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">type of personas<\/span><span id=\"E503\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">: a buyer may be goal-oriented or role-based. You might also want to build engaging personas (the combination of the two previous types based on user psychology), and fictional personas built on assumptions from previous experiences with users. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E504\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E505\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Which pers<\/span><span id=\"E506\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">ona type should you choose for your user story map?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E507\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E508\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">There\u2019s no definitive answer. Depending on your product, you might find that all four persona types are suitable for your project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E509\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E510\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">But, whatever your situation is, there are two principles you should fol<\/span><span id=\"E511\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">low when building a buyer persona \u2013 focus on data and on prioritization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E512\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E513\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">First and foremost, you need to define your user persona with data you already have. Brainstorming is good, but your ideas need to have solid ground. This data should not only include<\/span><span id=\"E514\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\"> customer behaviors and previous consumer experiences. Competitor analysis and product research should also lay the foundation of your user persona description. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E515\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E516\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">The next thing is prioritization. You already know that you can involve all four types of pers<\/span><span id=\"E517\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">onas, but not all of them will play an equal role in your user story map. That\u2019s why you should rank them from most to least critical.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"E518\" class=\"qowt-stl-Heading2 x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Write_User_Stories\"><\/span><span id=\"E519\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">3. Write User Stories<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"E520\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E521\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Now, it\u2019s time to start writing user stories. The goal here is to build the backbone \u2013 the structur<\/span><span id=\"E522\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">e of your map that captures the main activities the end-users will perform when using the product. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E523\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E524\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Depending on the scope of your project, you might need to write several user stories. Linda Ferguson, the CEO of the flashcard database <\/span><a id=\"E525\" contenteditable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/subjecto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"E526\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">https:\/\/subjecto.com\/<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E527\">, <\/span><span id=\"E528\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">says her company created up to twenty user stories before the launch of the service, which helped them create a more diverse user story map. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E529\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E530\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Regardless of the number of user stories you are planning to write, th<\/span><span id=\"E531\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">ey should always consist of three main components:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"E532\" class=\"qowt-li-2_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E533\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">User needs<\/span><span id=\"E534\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">. Start each story with a specific reason why a buyer would give your product a try. <\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E535\" class=\"qowt-li-2_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E536\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Product feature connected to the story<\/span><span id=\"E537\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">. Mention whether a story is tied to the entire product or a specific f<\/span><span id=\"E538\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">eature. It can be especially helpful for massive product launches.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"qowt-li-2_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\">Outcome<span id=\"E542\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\" style=\"font-size: inherit; text-align: justify;\">. Conclude with the results users will get from using your product. Nevertheless, still keep each individual case in mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"E565\" class=\"qowt-stl-Heading2 x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Break_down_User_Map_into_Activities\"><\/span><span id=\"E566\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">4. Break down User Map into Activities<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"E567\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E568\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">When mapping user stories, you\u2019ll notice that some of the steps can be put into similar categories. These steps are called activities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E569\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E570\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Typically, the structure of a user story map consists of three main elements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"E571\" class=\"qowt-li-4_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E572\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Activities<\/span><span id=\"E573\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\"> (we mentioned earlier) \u2013 high-l<\/span><span id=\"E574\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">evel tasks users perform with a product. <\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E575\" class=\"qowt-li-4_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E576\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Steps<\/span><span id=\"E577\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\"> \u2013 actions users perform to complete a specific activity. <\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E578\" class=\"qowt-li-4_0 qowt-list x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E579\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Details<\/span><span id=\"E580\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\"> \u2013 smaller actions involved in each step. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"E581\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E582\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">So, let\u2019s say your user wants to check the account balance. This is a high-level task or activity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E583\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E584\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Which steps do they need to go through to their balance? Probably they will first log in or sign up and then access their accounts. These are the steps. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E585\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E586\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">But what do they need to log in? They enter username or email, password, press the login button and th<\/span><span id=\"E587\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">en view account balances. These are details. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E588\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E589\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">Now you have a general idea of how you can break down your map into activities. But there are several routes a user story can take. For instance, when logging in to the account, a user might want to restore the<\/span><span id=\"E590\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\"> password or press the Remember Me button to save account details. It is important to include all possible deviations to keep your map complete. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"E591\" class=\"qowt-stl-Heading2 x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Revisit_Your_Draft_Several_Times\"><\/span><span id=\"E592\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">5. Revisit Your Draft Several Times <\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"E593\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E594\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">You\u2019ve finished your product map, or at least it seems like it\u2019s complete<\/span><span id=\"E595\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">. What now?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E596\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E597\" class=\"qowt-font7-Arial\">It\u2019s too early to start acting yet.
