Incorporating Wellness Into Modern Business

A health and wellness program is easy to set up within any sort of business, and the great thing is that you can invest as heavily or as lightly as you wish and still enjoy benefits. What’s more, it is not just about financial investment, if you get behind the program, then your staff will take it more seriously. 

Don’t Mistake Wellness For Fewer Sick Days

Reading other articles on this subject, and they will throw numbers around about how absenteeism costs billions every year, and how each person takes an average of seven days off per year. Let’s not fool ourselves when it comes to wellness and sick days. When staff take sick days, its sometimes because they want an extra day off work. Saying they are ill is the easiest way, and one of the most costly for you.

Even if illness is the genuine reason for the absenteeism, it will still occur less with motivated employees. When your staff love their job, they are more incentivised to show up and will try harder to get into work if they have a forgiving ailment. Incorporating wellness regimes into your business may not immediately lower the number of sick days workers will take. But it will go towards building a positive company culture that can increase overall employee happiness levels, which in turn will lower the number of sick days. 

Create A Health And Wellness Program

Many companies do this very differently depending on their priorities. Some will simply give staff fruit on Fridays that they can eat in or take home, while others will offer their free milk and cereal each morning and healthy snacks in the evening. Often free healthy beverages are incorporated into a wellness program or organise for staff flu shots each year. Other businesses have a small gym on the premises with the idea being that employees who exercise are less likely to become sluggish while working in a job where they have to sit down all day. There is also the opportunity to work off any frustrations caused by their job. If you think about the modern trend for co-working spaces, many of these offer exactly these types of things, healthy snacks, a gym, workout and yoga classes, all which promote wellness and ultimately happiness in the workplace. 

The Flexible Schedule Plan

There is a study published on theHarvard Business Review that shows how flexibility can reduce staff absenteeism, and improve the well-being of the staff member. Setting up this sort of flexible program is not difficult. You allow employees to shift their schedules around on a give-and-take basis. For example, if somebody wants to leave two hours early on Wednesday, then that person has to make back the two hours before the end of the week. 

What Improves Your Well-being?

You know your business, and you know yourself, so ask yourself what would improve the health and wellness of you and your staff, what your business can afford, and how can you turn that into a usable health and wellness program for your business.
